The Federal Government has directed has all telecommunications operators in the country to block all SIM cards not synchronized with valid National Identity Number (NIN) by December 30th.
This came after an urgent meeting of key stakeholders in the Communications industry convened by the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim (Pantami) on Monday, December 14, 2020. also ordered the network operators to ask all their subscribers to provide valid NIN to update their records and suspend SIM registration.
The meeting in its resolution insisted that all telecom operators must from Thursday, December 16, 2020 require all their subscribers to provide valid National Identification Number (NIN) to update SIM registration records.
NCC Spokesperson Dr. Ikechukwu Adinde said stakeholders agreed at Tuesday's meeting that drastic measures urgently needed to be implemented to improve the integrity and transparency of the SIM registration process in Nigeria.
The NIN is issued by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) upon enrolment into the National Identity Database and is used to capture an individual's records
